Examining the World in light of the Divine Word

Today is not an historic day, it is an Isaiah 5:20 day.

"There will always be people, many of goodwill, who do not share my view on the issue of choice. On this fundamental issue, I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield." (Obama Speech before Planned Parenthood Action Fund, July 17, 2007)

“Q: Do you personally believe that life begins at conception?
A: This is something that I have not come to a firm resolution on. I think it's very hard to know what that means, when life begins. Is it when a cell separates? Is it when the soul stirs? So I don't presume to know the answer to that question. What I know is that there is something extraordinarily powerful about potential life and that that has a moral weight to it that we take into consideration when we're having these debates.” (Obama at 2008 Democratic Compassion Forum at Messiah College Apr 13, 2008)

Is God provable by science?

A couple of days ago a local CBC radio host invited guests to call in to affirm or disaffirm their belief in God. One caller phoned in and calmly avowed his atheistic views due to the fact that God could not be proven scientifically. He claimed to be an atheist not because of a bad experience with theists but due to his assumption that science should point to God, if God exists. If science cannot prove God, God should not be affirmed was his contention.
At first listen the caller makes a compelling point. Since what we know to be real is observable by science, should God not be subject to the same tests? Of course many Christians have jumped on the bandwagon to prove the existence of God through scientific means. In part I value these attempts; in part I do not. On one hand it seems sensible that if there is a Creator God, then evidence of his handiwork, design, and providence would be seen in what he has created, just as one can tell something of an artist from his oil paintings. On the other hand, once must remember what science studies. Science is the observation of the physical universe, of which God has never been a part. While God enters into space, time and matter, the Christian God has always been seen as distinct from his Creation. He is in someway involved, while at the same time separate. For this reason, I would have reminded the caller that no one, anywhere, or at any time will be able to prove God through natural science. Science is about the physical, God is metaphysical. God is therefore not subject to scientific inquiry, even though his creation is. One can no more prove my existence through the existence of this blog than they can prove God through observing creation. While my blog claims to reflect the efforts of a guy named Aaron Rock, my blog is not me and I am not my blog. Creation and God are distinct, and while I see evidence of a Creator in the created, I will not find him in the cosmos. God is above and beyond us—and therefore not subject to scientific inquiry. Reject God if you will. But don’t reject him based on lack of scientific proof, for God is not subject to such human pursuits.
