An ancient metaphor with a message for today!
Most Southwoodites probably don’t grow fruit trees or have much experience in agriculture, but the Bible is ripe (pardon the pun) with agricultural metaphors. For example, the Bible speaks of the need to offer God our “first-fruits”. The idea is this: when giving to God of our time, talents or treasures, he isn’t interested in seconds. Just as you’d only serve your guests the best of the apples, peaches or oranges you’ve picked from your orchard, so we must offer God our best.
With that in mind, a ministry leader shared with me today his frustration with people wanting to serve in ministry, but with the stipulation that it had to be rare at best, and only when it’s convenient. In other words, after work time, family time, hobby time, sports time, TV time, and shopping time, some people are eager to serve! This brought to mind the concept of “first-fruits” living. If a person cannot give of their best, perhaps it is better to not serve at all—and simply be upfront about one’s lack of obedience in this area!
The Kingdom of God you see will not be built on scraps! God wants us to keep Him and His values on the forefront of our minds by offering Him our best (first-fruits). That doesn’t mean that we need become workaholics for the Kingdom, or become perfectionists, but excellence should be our middle name. As we enter into this new season of ministry, consider again this ancient metaphor. And then answer the question for yourself: what can I do to ensure that God is getting my first-fruits?
